What causes sleep anxiety?

Have you ever wondered what causes sleep anxiety? Is it an Anxiety Disorder or a Sleep Disorder? Does it have to be one or the other, or can it be both?

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America; Stress and Anxiety cause sleeping problems, and new research suggests sleep deprivation can cause an anxiety disorder. It is also reported that studies show that people with chronic insomnia have a higher risk of developing an anxiety disorder.

Sleeplessness does not me we are just tired all the time, it can affect our work or school performance, it can lead to an increased risk of injury, and many other health or mental problems. The mental health problems that we can face from not getting enough sleep can lead to anxiety as studies suggest, and also it can lead to mood disorders. Some of the health risks that people face are; heart disease, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.

What can you do for Treatment of Sleep Anxiety?

Some treatment options you have would include sleep medicine (both over the counter or prescribed), and CBT-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which teaches how to identify and modify behaviors that perpetuate sleeping problems. If you think you may have a sleep disorder, you can visit your PCP-primary care physician, a mental health professional, or a sleep disorder clinic.

You can also try meditation and relaxation techniques, regular exercise, yoga, music, or talking to someone. Having a regular scheduled time for bed and waking up in the morning are also helpful in combating sleep anxiety. I personally like to listen to sleep meditations that help me relax and let go of stress so that I can try to get a good night's sleep and be functional the next day.
